Sustainability & Community Impact
At Longevity Phinisi, we believe that true luxury is inseparable from responsibility. We operate in some of the most ecologically sensitive and culturally rich areas on Earth, and we consider ourselves custodians, not just visitors. Our commitment to sustainability is not an afterthought; it is woven into the very fabric of our operations, from the construction of our vessel to the daily choices we make at sea. Our goal is to create a positive impact, leaving the pristine environments of Indonesia even better than we found them and empowering the local communities who call this archipelago home. This is our pledge to the planet and its people.
Environmental Stewardship
Our environmental commitment is guided by the principle of ‘do no harm’ and a proactive desire to contribute to conservation. We have implemented a multi-faceted strategy to minimize our ecological footprint.
1. Marine Conservation & Responsible Practices
- Zero Discharge Policy: Our vessel is equipped with advanced wastewater treatment systems. We strictly adhere to a zero-discharge policy in sensitive marine areas, holding all black and grey water in tanks to be disposed of responsibly at designated port facilities.
- Single-Use Plastic Eradication: We are committed to being 100% free of single-use plastics. Guests are provided with reusable water bottles, and all onboard provisions are stored in glass or reusable containers. We work with our suppliers to reduce plastic packaging at the source.
- Reef-Safe Policies: We provide complimentary, high-quality, reef-safe sunscreen to all guests and crew. Our guides enforce strict no-touch policies during all snorkeling and diving activities to protect fragile coral ecosystems.
- Sustainable Anchoring: Our captain and crew are trained in responsible anchoring techniques, utilizing designated mooring buoys wherever possible and choosing sandy bottoms to avoid any damage to coral reefs.
2. Carbon Footprint Reduction & Offsetting
- Efficient Operations: We prioritize sailing over motoring whenever wind conditions permit, not only for a more serene experience but also to drastically reduce fuel consumption. Our vessel’s engine and generators are modern, fuel-efficient models that are regularly serviced for optimal performance.
- Carbon Offsetting Program: We calculate the carbon emissions for every voyage, including guest flights to the embarkation point. We then invest in verified carbon offset projects through our partnership with Trees4Trees, an Indonesian non-profit foundation that supports community-based reforestation and sustainable forestry in Central Java.
Community Empowerment & Social Responsibility
Our connection to Indonesia goes beyond its landscapes. We are deeply invested in the well-being and prosperity of its people. Our social initiatives are designed to create lasting, positive relationships and shared value.
1. Local Employment and Sourcing
- 100% Indonesian Crew: We are proud to maintain a 100% Indonesian crew, from our captain to our chefs. We invest in their professional development through continuous training and certification, providing stable, well-paying careers.
- Local Sourcing Priority: Over 80% of our onboard provisions are sourced from local markets and organic farms in places like Flores and Bali. This not only provides our guests with the freshest ingredients but also directly supports local economies and reduces food miles.
- Supporting Traditional Crafts: The textiles, carvings, and amenities on our longevity phinisi are handcrafted by Indonesian artisans. We partner with social enterprises that ensure fair wages and help preserve traditional craftsmanship.
2. Direct Community Investment
- The ‘Desa Sejahtera’ Initiative: In partnership with a local NGO, we have established the ‘Desa Sejahtera’ (Prosperous Village) initiative in a small village near Labuan Bajo. A percentage of every charter fee is dedicated to this fund, which supports education through school supply donations and funds waste management infrastructure to keep local beaches and waters clean.
- Respectful Cultural Exchange: Our visits to local communities are designed as respectful exchanges, not spectacles. We work with village elders to ensure our presence is welcome and beneficial. We hire local guides, purchase handmade goods directly from artisans, and ensure our interactions are authentic and dignified.
Our commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey of learning and improvement. We regularly review our practices with our team and partners to find new ways to deepen our positive impact. We believe that by traveling thoughtfully, we can be a powerful force for good, ensuring the wonders of Indonesia can be enjoyed for many generations to come.
